Wolfscairn LLC is an independent software studio run by Lou Pine. This policy explains what data the Wolfscairn website collects and what happens to your email address if you join the mailing list, in plain language.
This policy covers wolfscairn.com and its subdomains, including covenant.wolfscairn.com, and the Wolfscairn mailing list.
It does not cover the WordBurner Android app, which collects different data for different reasons and has its own policy at Privacy Policy for WordBurner. The two are separate on purpose. Installing the app does not put you on the mailing list, and joining the mailing list has nothing to do with the app.
If you never join the mailing list, we collect nothing about you beyond the ordinary server logs our web host keeps. If you do join, we hold your email address, the signup and confirmation record, and the source label, all described below, plus a brief opt-out record if you later unsubscribe. We do not track whether you open our messages or click links in them. We do not sell, rent or share the list with anyone. Every message has an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing takes effect immediately.
Your email address, and the address only. We do not ask for your name, your employer, your job title, or anything else, and there is no field to enter them.
Our mailing list provider also records the IP address and time of your signup, and the IP address and time of your confirmation click. That is the record that consent was actually given, and it is the thing that makes a confirmation step meaningful rather than decorative.
The list uses double opt-in. When you submit the signup form you are sent one email asking you to confirm. If you do not click the link in it, you are never added and you never hear from us again. Somebody typing your address into the form cannot sign you up.
The list is hosted by Buttondown, LLC, based in Richmond, Virginia, United States, acting as our data processor. Your address is stored on their systems, and messages are sent through them. Their privacy policy is at buttondown.com/legal/privacy and their data processing agreement is at buttondown.com/legal/data-processing-agreement. Buttondown is the only company that receives your address. There is no other processor, and no advertising or analytics company is involved.
Because Buttondown is based in the United States, your address is stored and processed there. If you are writing from the UK or the European Economic Area, that is a transfer outside your region, and you should factor it in when deciding whether to sign up. That transfer is covered by the Standard Contractual Clauses issued by the European Commission, which Buttondown's data processing agreement incorporates by reference.
The practical result is that we can see how many people are subscribed, and that is roughly all we can see.
There is a single Wolfscairn mailing list rather than one per project, so signing up anywhere means hearing about anything Wolfscairn builds. We record which page you signed up from, so that messages can be sent to the people they are actually relevant to instead of to everyone. That label sits alongside the signup and confirmation record described above.
Every message carries an unsubscribe link, and it works immediately without asking you why. You can also just reply and ask.
We keep your address until you unsubscribe. After you unsubscribe, a record that your address opted out is retained, because that is what stops you being added again by a later import. If you would rather be erased entirely instead, ask and we will delete the record too.
The site is served by GitHub Pages, a service of GitHub, Inc. Like any web host, GitHub receives and logs technical information needed to serve a page, including your IP address, the page requested, and your browser's user-agent string. We do not have access to these logs and cannot connect them to you.
We run no analytics on this site. There is no Google Analytics, no tag manager, no session recording, and no advertising network. The site sets no cookies of its own.
The home page shows a placeholder for a video from YouTube, a Google service. Loading the page does not contact YouTube at all. Only if you click the placeholder to load the player does your browser request it from YouTube's no-cookie address, at which point YouTube receives your IP address and the usual information it collects when you watch a video, under Google's privacy policy. Nothing on the page plays automatically.
The signup form on covenant.wolfscairn.com posts directly to Buttondown when you submit it. Until you press the button, that page contacts nothing outside wolfscairn.com at all.
We do not collect or have access to your name, postal address, phone number, date of birth, payment or financial details, employer, contacts, location beyond whatever a routine server log implies about an IP address, or any special category of data. We have no accounts and no login, so there is no password to lose.
These are offered to everybody who writes to us, wherever you live. We do not think it is worth working out which set of rules covers which reader in order to give some people fewer rights than others.

The legal basis for holding your address is your consent, given by confirming your signup, and you can withdraw it at any time.
This site and this mailing list are aimed at working professionals and are not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 16.
If what we collect changes, this policy will be updated and the date at the top will change with it. If a change is substantial, for example if we ever started tracking opens, the change will be announced to the list before it takes effect, not applied quietly.
